Since 1934, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has been providing cutting-edge treatment and compassionate care to patients from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds in Montreal, throughout Quebec and beyond.

The money you raise for The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will help fund cancer research and care at the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital and throughout Quebec. Funds will also be used to support new technologies in the areas of molecular diagnostics, functional imaging, biomarkers, molecular target discovery and validation, and advanced targeted radiation therapy. There are few cancer centres in the world where a strong combination of researchers and highly skilled and motivated clinicians exist under one roof. The Jewish General Hospital is such a centre and that’s why we need your support. Riders have the option of designating funds to a specific area of cancer research.

 

 

As a fellow rider and as President and CEO of the Jewish General Hospital Foundation I would like to express my sincere admiration and congratulations to everyone who took part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Through your dedication, hard work and effort we raised millions of dollars for the fight against cancer. Net proceeds from the event benefit the Segal Cancer Centre of the Jewish General Hospital, an international leader in the fight against cancer and a McGill University teaching hospital, and our hospital foundations and research partners across the province.

However, our struggle to overcome this insidious disease is not yet at its end. Currently, 2 in 5 Canadians will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime.

With that in mind I invite you to join us on the quest to conquer cancer by participating on July 7 and 8, 2012. I will again be riding through the beautiful Quebec countryside in support of the fight against cancer and I look forward to greeting you along the route.

- Dr. Nathalie Johnson: Having recently returned to Montreal from her five-year research training at the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Vancouver, Dr. Johnson's research focuses on determining the genetic abnormalities that are associated with a poor response to chemotherapy in lymphoma, especially in adolescent and young adult patients. - Dr. Ivan Topisirovic: Dr. Topisirovic, who studies changes in mRNA metabolism and protein synthesis in cancer, has been appointed an Investigator at the JGH Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research (LDI) and an Assistant Professor in McGill University’s Department of Oncology. Read more

- Dr. Frank Bladou: Dr. Bladou, a uro-oncologist, has been nominated Chief of Urology, as well as team leader of the Urologic Oncology Department at the JGH and is also a Professor at McGill University. Read more

- Dr. Michael Witcher: Dr. Witcher is a new investigator who is studying the fundamental aspects of gene regulation. This research could lead to new approaches in cancer treatments. Read More

The Fondation du Centre hospitalier régional de Trois-Rivières (CHRTR) was formed after the merger of Sainte-Marie Hospital Centre Foundation and Saint Joseph Hospital Centre Foundation in 1997. CHRTR’s mission is to raise funds and other goods to help create, maintain and develop health care and services in the Mauricie community and throughout central Quebec.

CHRTR’s Foundation stands among the top 10 most influential Hospital Centre Foundations in Quebec by helping the acquisition of high-tech machines and equipment, which will help optimize the care and services offered to its patients.

CHRTR’s Foundation is proud to associate itself with the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. The Fondation du Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec (CHUQ) plays a major role in fighting cancer, and serves over 1.7 million people throughout Quebec and Eastern Quebec. Most care and research services are provided at L’Hôtel-Dieu Hospital of Quebec. The Centre of Clinical Research and Evaluative Oncology (CCREO) was founded in November 2006, and maintains a staff of more than 50 oncologists, researchers and associates, who work closely with a team of researchers from the UHCG Cancer Research Department. Every year, over 50,000 patients and their families receive care at this unique facility specializing in diagnosis and treatment. The funds collected through The Ride to Conquer Cancer® will benefit the development of the CCREO and the enhancement of research programs in the fields of oncology, X-ray and genomics at the CHUQ.

The mission of the Foundation of the CSSS Gatineau:
Raise funds in order to support the CSSS Gatineau in better serving the members of its community in terms of their well-being and health.

The CSSS Gatineau is one of the most important healthcare centres in Quebec, consisting of 5,000 employees, more than 450 doctors, dentists and pharmacists, 8 midwives and more than 750 volunteers. It offers a full range of health services to more than 230,000 people in Gatineau as well as specialized services to the Outaouais and northwestern Quebec population.

The CSSS Gatineau includes the hospitals of Hull and Gatineau, one cancer centre, 8 CLSC centres, 4 care centres (Foyer du Bonheur, La Pietà, Maison bon séjour et Renaissance), one birthing centre (Maison de naissance de l’Outaouais), 3 geriatric day hospitals and one family medicine centre affiliated with McGill University.

The fight to conquer cancer:
The cancer centre at the CSSS Gatineau has gone through a considerable transformation over the past few years. A $31 million expansion project has quadrupled its size, created two new external radio-oncology rooms, two brachytherapy rooms including one operating room as well as a new area for oncology treatment. Furthermore, two high energy machines were replaced and one was added. Currently, 36 cancer patients a day receive their chemotherapy treatment and 100 their radio-oncology treatment. With over 900 new cases diagnosed per year in Gatineau, the fight to conquer cancer remains an investment priority for the Foundation of the CSSS Gatineau.

The participants of the Gatineau region:
The funds raised by the participants of the Gatineau region of the 2011 Ride have contributed to an evaluation and investigation project for diseases related to breast cancer at the CSSS Gatineau.

A new platform for breast cancer biopsies has been purchased which will optimize the use of the intervention rooms as well as increase access to this type of biopsy which are more and more necessary in early cancer diagnosis.

All the funds raised by the 2012 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer will serve to optimize the use of the existing intervention rooms and to increase the accessibility of the diagnostic services of the Cancer Centre of the Gatineau Hospital.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is supported each year by a group of dedicated leaders who volunteer their time and expertise to form a committee whose purpose is to recruit corporate teams and sponsors to the event. The Jewish General Hospital is incredibly grateful to these dedicated men and women, many of whom are also participants in and leading fundraisers for the Ride.
